AMOLED screens are now cheaper than LCDs

Already far from the first year, some flagship smartphones use AMOLED technology instead of LCD panels. Leading manufacturers note that it allows not only to improve the quality of the transmitted picture, but also to significantly increase the battery life of the devices. Take, for example, Samsung, which, based on AMOLED technology, integrates the Always-On Display function in its devices. Thanks to it, some of the elements displayed on the screen now completely do not consume battery power.

AMOLED technology is increasingly being used in a wide variety of devices. It can often be found in modern phones, laptops, smart watches and even televisions. Increased demand, in turn, sooner or later reduces the cost of manufacturing AMOLED panels. More recently, it became known that the production of AMOLED displays is now even cheaper than the production of LCD panels.

Analyst IHS Technology in its latest report indicates that the cost of producing LTPS LCD and AMOLED displays for 5-inch Full HD devices in the first quarter of this year was $ 14.6 and $ 14.3, respectively. And this is the first time in history that AMOLED technology has become cheaper to manufacture than LCD technology.

IHS Technology notes that the sharp decline in production costs for AMOLED began in December 2015. And this trend will continue for at least the next few months. As soon as the demand for AMOLED technology is equal to the offer, we can expect its appearance in budget models of various devices. Nevertheless, analysts are confident that the decline in the cost of technology, most likely, will not affect the reduction in the final cost of flagship devices, since several key factors play a role here.

The cost of production of AMOLED panels will continue to decline. And a lot of help in this will be provided by Samsung, which is preparing to launch new production lines. If the company manages to maintain high demand (which, most likely, will be so, since the production price is also declining), then very soon a real “AMOLED boom” awaits us.

Of course, everything will depend on the end device manufacturers. After all, there is a possibility (albeit small) that the largest market players (such as Apple, for example) can make their choice in favor of the LCD. This, in turn, can seriously limit how much the production cost of AMOLED screens can decrease.
