"Victory Day is an occasion to revise old films about the Great Patriotic War. Filmed in the digital age, they are available on the Internet, but often only in low resolution. You can watch, but the quality leaves much to be desired, "Yandex said in a press release on its website. "We wondered if it was possible to correct the situation, and decided to conduct an experiment: they took several films and applied technology to them, which increases the resolution of images with the help of neural networks."
It turned out very cool.
In the experiment, seven films from the Movie Search: "The Rainbow" by Mark Donskoy (1943), "The Cranes Are Flying" by Mikhail Kalatozov (1957), "My Dear Man" by Joseph Kheifits (1958), "The Fate of a Man" by Sergei Bondarchuk (1959), Ivanovo childhood "by Andrei Tarkovsky (1962)," The Soldier's Father "by Rezo Chkheidze (1964) and" The Tango of Our Childhood "by Albert Mkrtchyan (1985).
The film frames passed through the neural network were processed by SuperResolution technology, developed in Yandex. It can process both static images and video, eliminating the defects of digitization and increasing the sharpness of the image. All processing was in automatic mode: the neural network needed only to be taught.
Updated versions of movies can be found on KipoPoisk or directly in Yandex search - just enter the name of the movie. If you like the atmosphere of the old movie about the Great Patriotic War - this is a godsend for you.
