Portugal lasts four days on renewable energy

Португалия продержалась четыре дня на возобновляемых источниках энергии

Portugal lasted 107 weeks without fossil fuels last week, taking another step toward switching to clean and renewable energy sources. The experiment began at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, and continued until the evening of May 11, when all power plants were restored.

At the end of the 80s, a modern thermal power station was built in this country near the town of Sines; it was recently awarded the World Wildlife Fund, where it was called one of the largest facilities polluting Europe with emissions. In addition, it takes 13th place in the list of 30 most dirty industries in Europe.

And although it’s too early to rejoice, since it’s still far to complete the transition to renewable and environmentally friendly sources, you can be happy for Portugal. The country was able to live four days, relying on a couple of hydroelectric power plants, the energy of the sun and wind. The European Union played a role in such a small but important experiment, and a directive was recently issued stating that UN member states should receive at least 31% of their electricity from renewable sources.

Portugal is not the only EU country to make progress in this important field. In Germany, too, there is an excess of energy produced by wind and solar power plants. When this happens, gas installations are automatically turned off, which is no, no, and it saves a little coal, gas, and at the same time money.
