You have never been interested in what happens to astronauts when their lander falls into the water? NASA space agency engineers are constantly working to make such landings more comfortable and safe. And in order to implement their plans, they have to conduct numerous tests and crash tests using well-known mannequins. A photo report on one of these tests was recently published on the official NASA page on the Flickr service.
According to NASA experts, the collision of the descent vehicle with water has a very strong effect on the human body, despite the parachute and a significant decrease in the rate of fall. That is why it is very important to take into account all the variables and calculate the impact force of the capsule on the water surface. To do this, you just need to dress the test mannequins in suits of astronauts and dump them inside the Orion apparatus into the reservoir of the NASA Research Center in Langley.
“Based on this test, we not only learn how the entire structure behaves during a collision with a water surface, but also calculate how much the impact will affect the crew seats and the bodies of astronauts,” explains Lockheed Martin employee Mark Baldwin.
A whole crowd of employees of the research center gathered to look at this fall. The bodies of mannequins are covered with special damage sensors that read a lot of indicators during a fall. Thanks to the data obtained, scientists and engineers will later be able to calculate and, if possible, minimize the risks of injuring astronauts during a splashdown. So far, four drops have been made into the tank from a crane. In the immediate plans of the team, the implementation of the fall of the apparatus, previously swung in the air, to take into account its entry into the water at unusual angles.
