The Kommersant publication, citing informed sources, reports that the authorized representatives of the Russian Space Forces are already consulting with the Progress Samara Rocket and Space Center, discussing the technical design of new-generation satellites of the type 14F156 Hrazdan.
The Russian Ministry of Defense plans to replace the Persona-type satellites, the development of which was begun in the early 2000s, but was completed only a few years ago. Apparently, the devices that were at the time of the start of development are very modern and advanced, yet do not fully meet the high demands of the military. Personas will soon be replaced by new Hrazdan satellites, which will eventually be included in the new space reconnaissance system.
Hrazdan satellites will be designed to conduct optical-electronic reconnaissance and will begin to replace the "Persons" in 2019. Three Persona satellites were already launched in the period from 2008 to 2015, one failed in 2008 several months after launch, two are still in operation.
The source of the Kommersant newspaper reported that according to its characteristics, the Hrazdan satellite will be “head and shoulders above its predecessors”, it will be equipped with new equipment and a high-speed radio channel with additional modern protection. The same source also announced a preliminary launch plan: the first satellite of the new generation will be launched in 2019, the second in 2022, the third will fly in 2024. The third and all subsequent devices will be equipped with new telescopes with a diameter of more than two meters.
