Yesterday, November 15, 2016, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant began the installation of a protective steel sarcophagus that can help prevent the spread of radiation. Immediately after the accident at the fourth energy block of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986, the fourth block was covered with a sarcophagus, but due to the fact that it was not hermetic, for future security it was decided to dismantle it, replacing it with another, more reliable and modern option.
The Minister of Environment of Ukraine noted that the installation of a new metal arch is a historical event that is important not only for Ukraine itself, but also for a number of neighboring countries, which were adversely affected by the consequences of this man-made disaster.
Installation of the main elements of the arch takes a lot of time, plan to complete the work only by the end of next year. The weight of the arch, made of stainless steel, is more than 36 thousand tons, the height of the structure is 110 meters, and its width is about 275 meters. Now the sargophagus is moving to the power unit.
“The huge steel structure has already moved 6 meters. After analyzing the initial stage of the movement, the sliding process will continue and should be completed in the coming days. The NSC is moving in with a special system, which consists of 224 hydraulic jacks and allows the arch to be moved 60 cm in one cycle. It is assumed that the whole process will take up to 4 days with a total time of continuous movement of approximately 33 hours ", - SSE ChNPP.
The construction is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which cost the new sarcophagus about half a billion euros. Yes, not the cheapest project, but the new dome is guaranteed to serve a hundred years, if done correctly.
