Charitable organization 10:10 and the Imperial College of London decided to conduct a joint experiment, in which they are going to equip the UK railways with solar panels and contact rails. Trials will begin in January of this year. It is assumed that the use of solar energy and the autonomy of the railways from the common grids will allow more efficient use of electricity and reduce the load on power plants.
At the moment, most of the trains in the country are diesel, but the UK railway department is going to fix it, thus improving the environmental situation and stimulating the transition to "clean" energy.
The decision to use solar batteries is due to the fact that in remote areas of the UK power stations will not be able to provide railways with electricity, but there is a lot of sun everywhere. If the experiment shows itself well, then in 2018, the authorities will start massively equipping railroad tracks with solar batteries. The price of electricity generated by solar and light power plants is constantly decreasing, so it is becoming more and more reasonable to use renewable energy. So, by 2050, the authorities are going to complete the electrification process.
Recall that by 2025 in the UK are going to close all coal-fired power plants, replacing them with environmentally friendly stations of a new type, generating energy from renewable sources.
