MetaLimbs - an extra pair of hands will never hurt

With the help of a pair of hands you can make a huge amount of all kinds of things, if, of course, these hands grow from the right place. However, many of us sometimes think: here I would like a couple more extra limbs - then you could do twice as many useful things. Dreaming is not forbidden. Japanese researchers from Keio University in Tokyo decided to immediately move from dreams to work and created auxiliary mechanical hands, which were called MetaLimbs.

Artificial limbs are controlled by special controllers that are worn on a person’s feet and include special space-tracked markers, finger-guided sensors, and even a device for tactile feedback with manipulators to sense their contact with objects. The accuracy of such mechanical hands is high enough to, for example, solder small elements onto a printed circuit board (all this is shown in the video below) or hold a glass of water to a person’s mouth when his hands are occupied and do not shed drops at the same time.

Two mechanical arms are attached to the human body using a special backpack. Agree - the idea is simple, like five kopecks, but at the same time, if it is properly developed, you can eventually get really useful extra limbs in everyday life and in production. The main brain for the whole business is to adjust, because at first it will be extremely difficult to control four hands at once. The developers of the MetaLimbs project are planning to demonstrate their achievements at the upcoming Siggraph 2017 exhibition, which will be held in Los Angeles at the end of July this year.
