Paranoia Ilona Mask is beginning to annoy AI researchers

The fear of super intelligent machines is quite real for Ilona Mask. The founder of Tesla and SpaceX has already spoken about this many times, but perhaps the most emotional remark about this was made to US senators, stating that artificial intelligence (AI) is "a fundamental risk to the existence of human civilization." This comment attracted the attention of not only the authorities, but also the researchers of this AI. And, apparently, they are not very agree with him.

“While there is a need to establish a dialogue about the positive effects that AI technology can bring with it, it seems that the main part of Mr. Mask’s anxiety is centered around artificial scenes of world capture by artificial intelligence,” the University’s computer science expert said. Arizona State Subbarao Kampati in an interview with Inverse.

“Mr. Mask’s panic distorts the meaning of such public discussions. And this is very sad. "

Kampampati, who is also the head of the Association for Assistance in the Development of AI and the Trustee of the Partnership for AI organization, was not the only person recently who responded to Mask’s recent statements about AI. Francois Hall and David Ha, the researchers of in-depth machine learning at Google, also took advantage of this opportunity and through their Twitter pages defended AI and machine learning (MO).

“In my opinion, the biggest danger is mass control and regulation of fertility through targeting and whole armies of bots engaged in propaganda,” wrote Holle in one of the messages.

“Artificial intelligence and machine learning have the potential to exacerbate several existing problems. But it’s hard to believe that they are able to create new ones, ”Hall added in another message.

The researcher Pedro Domigos from the University of Washington did not have anything at all to respond to such statements by Mask, so on Twitter he was noted for being simple and concise: “Eh.”

Is the threat of AI really real?

David Ha from Google also expressed doubt that, despite his work at OpenAI, he was conducting the development of technology for self-driving cars at Tesla, as well as the recent launch of his new project Neuralink and at the same time having access to advanced AI technologies (which he himself declared) , Mask understands what he is talking about.

“I also have access to the most advanced AI technologies and to be honest, I’m not very impressed with what they can do,” Ha commented on his Twitter page.

Kampampati, in turn, referred to the report on the development of AI technologies in 2016, published by the administration of former President Barack Obama, in which very timely, but positive recommendations were made regarding the regulation policy for the development of artificial intelligence. The White House report did not at all contain “any mention of Mr. Mask’s concern about artificial superintelligence,” Kambampati told Inverse. And, in his opinion, this is rather convincing evidence that all these fears cannot be considered valid.

As noted by the portal Futurism, it seems rather dishonest that only one Musk attracts all the attention to himself, while he is far from being the only prominent representative of the near-scientific and technical industry, paying attention to the likely threats from superintelligence. For example, the famous physicist Stephen Hawking, too, constantly did not disdain comments about the AI-apocalypse. And yet the most important question is this: should we really be afraid of AI?

If we talk about its current state, then the answer is no. At the same time, the rapid development of technology in recent years makes experts think about the fact that we are getting closer and closer to the technological singularity, when computers surpass their creators. But it is definitely clear that the current level of AI and robots has not even come close to that level of killer robots that we are shown in science fiction. And in fact it is not clear whether it will come closer at all.

The famous futurist and "singularity enthusiast" Ray Kurzweil believes that singularity is not the thing that we should be afraid of. Should be afraid of how people can use AI. That is why the best course for us now is to define clear and understandable ideas about what we would expect from the results of research on AI technologies. Musk is definitely right in one thing: we need to develop regulatory methods for the whole process. But Kampampati with Hall and Ha are also right, pointing out the absence of reason for panic.
