Microsoft will integrate artificial intelligence in the headset HoloLens 2

HoloLens augmented reality headset has not yet entered the open market (only software developers who are willing to fork out for $ 3,000 have access to it), and Microsoft is already working on a second model of this device. Apparently, it will largely surpass its predecessor, because the official announcement says that HoloLens 2 will contain a separate chip for the operation of artificial intelligence. This chip was developed by engineers of the Redmond company, but it will be produced by an outside contractor.

The AI processor will be primarily engaged in analyzing and processing visual data. It would take too much time to process data on remote servers, which would undoubtedly affect the speed of the device and the delays that are critical for augmented reality. As a result of the integration of artificial intelligence into the second HoloLens model, its speed will increase significantly, while the device will remain completely mobile and independent of cloud computing. A processor for processing artificial intelligence will be built into the Holographic Processor Unit (HPU).

Microsoft is not the first company that seeks to integrate artificial intelligence into a mobile device. Facebook, Google and dozens of medium and small companies are currently working on such solutions. There are two ways to integrate AI into a mobile device. The first is the creation of lightweight versions of neural networks that do not require large computing power. The second is the development of specialized AI-processors, which today produce, for example, ARM and Qualcomm. Even Apple, according to rumors, plans to build the Apple Neural Engine chip in its future smartphones.
