Anonymity will not save: AI learned to recognize people hiding face

Scientists continue to actively improve artificial intelligence and teach it new tricks. For example, a team of researchers from the United States and India have developed a neural network that can once and for all deprive participants of various kinds of uprisings, rallies and protests that hide their faces behind scarves, balaclava and other clothing items. In the future, it will be much more difficult for a person who violates the law to flee justice, hoping to remain anonymous at the same time.

This system works on the basis of recognition of 14 points on the face and measuring the distance between them. On the basis of the measurements obtained, a construction is obtained that is unique for each individual person, allowing him to be recognized even when he partially hides his face behind glasses, a beard, a scarf or a mask. For the training of artificial intelligence, scientists used more than 2000 images, which were depicted, both individuals and groups of people. At the moment, the system is able to successfully recognize people in 56% of cases, but the results of its work are gradually improving as learning.

Yes, technology is still far from ideal. Nevertheless, a start has been made, and in the coming years it will be much more difficult to hide on the other side of dark glasses or masks than before. Developed by scientists from the University of Cambridge and the National Institute of Technology of the City of Warangal, artificial intelligence will be presented to the general public at the International Conference on Computer Vision Workshops 2017, which will open its doors in late October this year. The results of their work, researchers have published on the web and anyone can read them.
