Participants of the lunar experiment SIRIUS after 17 days "returned to Earth"

Not all astronauts are going to fly to Mars in the future and establish colonies there. Some, for example, plan to fly to the moon and also thoroughly prepare for this. Yesterday, the SIRIUS experiment simulating a flight to the Moon was completed, during which the participants made a seventeen-day flight, and yesterday they “returned” to the ground and opened hatches.

Three men and three women took part in the project: member of the cosmonaut corps Anna Kikina, RSC Energia employee Mark Serov, representative of Airbus Defense and Space Victor Fetter, and staff of IBMP Elena Luchitskaya, Natalia Lysova and Ilya Rukavishnikov.

The experiment lasted 17 days. In its course, the participants reached the "circumlunar orbit" and made virtual turns around the moon, choosing the best place to land through the "porthole".

In addition, the state of the experiment participants who independently tried to assign roles, learned to live, interact, work and relax in a limited space, which is also important in future flights, was studied.

The SIRIUS experiment was conducted on the basis of the Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP), so they tried to study other aspects of future flights. For example, for greater realism, a virtual reality installation was mounted directly in the module. The experiment participants also ate space food from the Russian Cosmopit rations.

For the purity of the experiment, an extraordinary situation was simulated, during which the crew lost contact with the Earth, where the instructions came from. In this situation, the subjects independently developed a new action plan for which they adapted the tasks assigned to them.
