PHILIPS Lighting Company announced that it has begun testing its Li-Fi (Lighting Fidelity) technology at the offices of the French investment company Icade. At the moment, Li-Fi provides employees with broadband Internet access using LEDs that transmit information at speeds of up to 30 Mbit / s through light waves.

In the offices of the company Li-Fi while working through special USB dongles, equipped with built-in modems. To use the Li-Fi network, the user needs to connect the device to his computer. To access the network, the dongle uses infrared communication, which is much safer and more reliable than Wi-Fi. Communication on the visible light works by switching the supply voltage to the LEDs at a very high frequency, which is invisible to the human eye.

Li-Fi has a number of advantages. For example, this network can work in environments where the use of Wi-Fi can interfere with the proper operation of the equipment. Since light from diodes is used for data transmission in Li-Fi, the technology can be successfully used under water.

Nevertheless, despite all the prospects, difficulties with the widespread introduction of Li-Fi can also arise, because it also has drawbacks. For example, the network signal is not transmitted through the wall, which means that a direct visibility is required for the transmission of information, which already complicates the installation of a large building with a Li-Fi network, in which there are many separate rooms. Nevertheless, technology definitely has a right to life. It will be very interesting to observe how it will develop in the future.
