A story written by AI allowed to participate in a literary competition

Researchers from the University of the Future, located in the Japanese city of Hakodate, not without pride shared their latest achievements with the press. They managed to create artificial intelligence, capable of writing stories and even whole stories under the supervision of a person. Moreover, one of the works of this AI was reviewed and approved for participation in the well-known within Japan literary competition named after Hoshi Shinichi. If the selection committee considered that the work of the machine is worthy of the right to compete with the works of real writers, this already says a lot.

People have been trying for a very long time to create artificial intelligence, capable of emulating human creativity to one degree or another. The Japanese development team was led by Professor Hitoshi Matsubara. To write the work of AI, you need a certain starting point. Initially, the developers indicated the gender of the main character of the story, as well as in general terms outlined the frame of the plot. They also provided artificial intelligence with a list of words, phrases, and whole sentences that they might use in the process, or might not use. The main task of AI was to combine all these elements into a single structure, which should not only be readable, but also seem fascinating to readers.

As a result, a work was born entitled “The Day the Computer Wrote a Story”, in the center of the plot of which was artificial intelligence, which once discovered a talent for writing. This work was not the only one in the competition created with the participation of AI. In addition to him, there were 10 other works, during the writing of which artificial intelligence was involved to one degree or another. True, in other cases, the contribution of the machine to the work was not so serious. In total, more than 1,400 entries took part in the competition. The story, of course, did not go further than the first round and dropped out, as one of the judges decided that the characters in the story are not well disclosed. It should be noted at the same time that the judges were not specifically told which of the works were written by AI, and which by people. This example is the first sign that soon the machine can still compete with a person in various creative fields.
