Spiders are amazing creatures that can evoke horror and admiration in humans at the same time. German scientists from the Stuttgart Institute for Computational Design (ICD) were inspired by spiders when designing a pair of amazing robots moving along the walls and weaving their nets out of carbon-fiber cable. In the resulting structures, upon completion of the process, an adult can quite sleep, as if in a hammock. The developers of robots call their concept “swarm construction”, since the robots constantly interact with each other.
“Now we are at the very starting point of our journey in terms of exploring the architectural potential of such a building system. But we are confident that with the help of such robots in the future it will be possible to create such structures that cannot be erected in other ways, ”explains the head of research from ICD Akim Menges.

So far this is just a wall hammock, but imagine that such babies will be able to create in the future, when scientists will improve them and teach them to work with other materials besides cables. The active interaction of two mechanical builders is an amazing sight, even though we are witnessing an early stage of this experiment.
