Daimler, which owns the Mercedes car brand, decided not to wait for Tesla Motors to start making trucks, and yesterday presented a prototype of its first all-electric heavy truck in Stuttgart, Germany. Truck weighs 26 tons. It is called Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck, and, as the name suggests, is intended primarily for the transport of goods over short distances in urban environments. Such an environmentally friendly healthy person will also be pleased by city dwellers, because usually the engines of big cars make a lot of noise, electric cars are deprived of this disadvantage, so the new product from Mercedes will come in handy as soon as (if) it is launched into mass production.
Urban eTruck will be able to drive about 200 kilometers on a single charge, so it’s impossible to get a couple of circles around the landfill. Tests of the prototype are planning to begin in the fall, but there is no talk about mass production yet - engineers are talking about the possibility of putting such trucks on the conveyor only in the next decade.
In a press release from the manufacturer, it is said that until 2025 the cost of batteries manufactured by the concern will be significantly reduced, and this will allow making more efficient and capacious batteries. Perhaps by this time the appropriate infrastructure will arrive in time, the prototype will be finalized and put into mass production.
Earlier, Tesla Motors announced its first electric truck, which will show at the beginning of the next, 2017. Recall that Russian manufacturers are not far behind the fashion trends and even slightly ahead of the leading global manufacturers. Last year, KamAZ, a Russian truck and machinery manufacturer, created a prototype electric truck based on KamAZ-4308.
Last summer, KamAZ specialists began testing it. Russian experts also emphasize that mass production of an electric truck can be established, but not earlier than 2020. The problems are almost the same as in Germany - there is no full network of charging stations, the battery lasts only 50 kilometers, and the prototype itself needs to be significantly improved.
