An amazing technology that allows you to literally look around the corner without looking for it was invented at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012. The creator of the technology, Andreas Velten, rather quickly faced the problem of financing his research, which is why the development of an unusual laser camera was suspended. However, he came to the aid of the US military from the agency DARPA. They invested 4.4 million dollars in the invention, which allowed Andreas to continue working.
A whole team of scientists from the Morgridge Research Institute is now working on creating a camera capable of seeing objects hidden from its lens. Of course, all studies are conducted under the leadership of Andreas Velten. The idea of Welten was quite simple, but at the same time difficult to implement technically. The camera emits a laser pulse, which is reflected from various surfaces and objects in its path. Some individual photons reach the camera lens, and then the algorithm comes in, collecting the fragmentary information received from these photons into a three-dimensional image of what is around the corner.
The camera captures images every 2 picoseconds (1 picosecond is a trillionth of a second), so the distance traveled by the photons can be measured with incredible accuracy. Additional funds received from the military will be used to improve the technology, increase the level of detail of the 3D-generated objects by the algorithm and reduce the camera itself, which the language does not yet turn out to be called compact. Of course, the speed of its work also leaves much to be desired, since it takes several minutes to form an image of invisible objects. Scientists plan to reduce this time to 10 seconds. Andreas Velten himself claims that after four years the camera will be able to enter into service with the American army.
