Right now, quite a lot of self-propelled cars are being developed in the world, some of those already driving on roads already have autopilot. But all these machines are united by one thing: in their salons all the usual controls are still installed: the steering wheel, the pedals, the gearshift lever and much more. This is quite reasonable, because the driver, if something went wrong, can always take control of the car in their hands. But the new Komatsu dump truck doesn’t need all these rudimentary and outdated pedals with pedals. He doesn’t need a driver either, so the developers didn’t even equip this truck with a cab. Autonomous Haulage Vehicle dump truck is a powerful thing, everything in it is done in order to increase productivity, and its 2700 horsepower is more proof of that. And the absence of a cabin and a driver also plays into the hands of AUV, so he does not have to carry an extra ton of weight on himself in the form of a cabin and a driver.
The developers explain that at first glance a strange decision actually looks quite reasonable, because the driver can not always see what is happening behind him, for this he has to turn around, use side mirrors to get an idea of what is behind him. Often it is necessary even to open the door and lean out to get a good turn and drive up to the place where the brought cargo should be poured out. The unmanned dump truck operating in fully automatic mode does not have such problems, because it is guided by cameras located in different places on the hull. And still such a truck is much more balanced due to the uniform distribution of the load on all four wheels, so it confidently keeps on the road, even in ice.
A prototype of an Autonomous Haulage Vehicle dump truck was recently shown at an exhibition in Las Vegas, but Komatsu says that very soon they plan to start producing such trucks.
