Talk about inexpensive drones, capable of behaving like swarm insects, has been going on in military circles for a very long time. Military engineers have repeatedly proposed to translate the idea into reality, and now, finally, the US Air Force conducted the first test dumping a swarm of such drones from airplanes over the territory of California. A swarm of tiny drones, each weighing no more than 300 grams, totaled 103 units, which allowed the American army to set a kind of record for launching the most numerous swarm of drones in history.
The launch of a swarm of drones was carried out with three F / A-18E / F Super Hornet fighter-bombers. Perdix model drones are relatively inexpensive devices by the standards of the American army, so the loss of several units during launch due to any breakdowns is not at all critical for the military. Discharge was carried out above the surface of China Lake Lake, located in California. The tests were carried out under the strict supervision of ground command, where important persons from the Pentagon were present, who monitored what was happening.
Perdix drones demonstrated advanced techniques of royal behavior, when the entire array of UAVs makes a collective decision about building into a certain form in the sky, or suddenly takes off and moves to a new location of dislocation. This is most clearly seen in the recordings from droning observation devices. Records of their testimony you can see in the video. It is amazing to watch how drones skillfully line up in a semicircle or fly to a certain point and start circling right above it. All their movements are completely autonomous, as they constantly communicate with each other. This is a kind of complex collective organism. Once launched, drones can move at a low altitude and collect important data for military intelligence.
The tests were conducted back in October last year, but the video was aired on the “60 minutes” program of the CBS channel relatively recently. In addition to launching the Perdix drones in the video, they also showed us a new LOCUST system (LOw-Cost Uav Swarm Technology), shooting numerous hover drones from ground installations. These drones are initially similar to rockets, but after a shot they release wings and become more like the drones we are used to.
