Obtained in the early 2000s, a material called "graphene" has recently been increasingly used in various fields. Graphene has extremely interesting properties: it is flexible, transparent, very durable, and is also an excellent conductor. It is not surprising that graphene is predicted to be the fate of the material that will be used in next-generation electronic devices. And the first prototypes have already begun to appear. For example, recently researchers from the Institute of Organic Electronics, Electron-Beam and Plasma Technologies of Fraunhofer have created a first-of-its-kind transparent OLED display, all of whose electrodes are made of graphene.
The device was made in an interesting way: the electrodes connecting the matrix of light-emitting elements based on organic light-emitting diodes cover an area of 2 x 1 centimeter. They were created by a chemical vapor deposition process using a chamber with an atmosphere of methane and hydrogen, as well as a copper plate heated to a temperature of 800 degrees Celsius. The plate acts as a catalyst, and a chemical reaction takes place on its surface, during which methane molecules break down. The carbon atoms released during this process are deposited on the copper surface and form a graphene layer one atom thick.
The world's first display based on graphene electrodes
It should be said that the screen created in this way is not the first of its kind, but is the first to use OLED technology. Project leader Dr. Beatrice Beyer states that
“The first commercial products based on the technology developed by us may appear on the market in two or three years. We will continue to work with our colleagues from the Spanish company Graphenea SA and the British corporation Aixtron Ltd. to create more advanced graphene-based products. "
