According to the ST Daily, a successful flight of the first model of a Chinese hydrogen fuel cell aircraft took place recently. It is worth saying that thanks to this launch, China became the third country in the world to test a new generation of aircraft. Previously, this has already been done by specialists from Germany and the USA.
The Chinese aircraft is equipped with a fuel cell that is capable of producing power up to 20 kilowatts. During the tests, the aircraft rose to a height of 320 meters. In addition, as noted by the engineers who watched the flight, the engine showed stable uninterrupted operation at ambient temperatures of minus 20 degrees Celsius. The flight model took place near the city of Shenyang, which is located in the northeastern province of Liaoning. A hydrogen-powered aircraft was designed by the designers of the Dalian Chemical Research Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in collaboration with specialists from the Liaonin Aviation Scientific Research Institute. The design was based on the RX1E aircraft. It is worth saying that initially the RX1E model is equipped with an electric motor, but the inventors succeeded in making changes to the design, which allowed replacing the electric motor with a similar one on hydrogen fuel. In addition, the aircraft is equipped with several batteries that are charged during the flight.
The first launch of the aircraft with a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system called Dimona, which also had a power of 20 kW, took place in April 2008 and was conducted by Boeing. The second launch took place in September 2016 at the airport of the German city of Stuttgart. The aircraft was called HY4 and was developed by experts of the aircraft company Pipistrel.
