Scientists from the US Naval Laboratory created a new material for armor, which is different from all other lightness and ballistic characteristics. Thermoplastic polymer hardens under the influence of blows, but after that it can again be returned to its original state. Body armor made of such material can be repaired literally on the move, using the available tools.
Dr. Mike Roland, a researcher at the Naval Laboratory, explained that the edges of the damaged section of the plate are easily fused, restoring the structure of a bullet-proof vest or other object made of this material. It is enough to heat the damaged area to about one hundred degrees Celsius with the help of some hot object. Iron, for example. After the procedure described above, the polymer again becomes whole and soft.
Phys.org writes that the material resembles rubber to the touch, apparently it doesn’t differ from it either, but its properties will allow the development to be used to create light, transparent and flexible armor, the properties of which do not deteriorate in any way even after multiple bullet hits.
