Back in the eighties, Robert Zemeckis, in the second part of the famous film “Back to the Future”, presented his vision of 2015 quite futuristic: with holograms, self-lacing shoes, flying skateboards and cars. The year 2017 is already in the yard, and we are still moving in the old manner. But recently, the well-known company Airbus introduced the concept of a futuristic personal hybrid flying vehicle called Pop.Up.
The main distinguishing feature of this car, unlike other similar developments, is that Pop.Up easily transforms from a car into an aircraft and back, choosing the most optimal type of movement under the control of an artificial intelligence system that guarantees the minimum time of arrival at the end point.
Pop.Up consists of three basic components: the first, naturally, is the passenger cabin, about the size of a miniature compact car. The Airbus campaign calls this cabin a passenger capsule. In addition, it can be installed on a self-propelled chassis, which transforms it into a self-driving car-robot. In case of difficulty on the road, the passenger capsule can pick up a quadcopter, which, taking it to its destination, again put on the car platform. Moreover, while moving both on the ground and in the air, several Pop.Up platforms can be combined into auto or even flying trains.
In addition to the Airbus specialists, a group of designers from the Italian design company Italdesign, which collaborates with such giants of the automotive industry as Volkswagen, BMW and Alfa Romeo, participated in the development of the concept.
