Norway plans to build the world's first shipping tunnel

The Norwegian Sea Stadhavet is considered one of the most dangerous in this area. Even the Vikings preferred to bypass this place or pull their boats overland, just to not cross the dangerous waters by swimming. Sea Stadhavet stormy no less than 100 days a year, and many ships, as well as their teams are at great risk. The idea of building the first shipping tunnel in the world, which would avoid falling into this sea, was born in the 70s of the last century, but only now the technological level has been reached that allows it.

The tunnel was named Stad Ship Tunnel, and it will provide an opportunity to make a safe passage through the Stadhavet sea to 70-120 ships daily. To begin with, the development of the project attracted the architectural company Snohetta, whose artists and designers created an initial project plan and several drawings showing how the Stad Ship Tunnel will look.

From the north, the entrance to the tunnel will be located near the town of Selye, while the south will be located near the town of Molde. In the area of the southern entrance, a bridge will be relocated, from which everyone will be able to see the ships entering or leaving the tunnel.

On the map presented, the tunnel is marked with a yellow line. Dotted lines indicate dangerous and relatively safe routes that ships are now crossing.

The Norwegian Parliament has already allocated an amount of one billion Norwegian kroner (about $ 118 million) at the start of construction of this facility, and the total project budget, according to experts, will be 2.3 billion Norwegian kroner (approximately $ 272 million). But if the authors of the project meet the deadlines, then very soon Norway will get a great architectural landmark. According to the head of construction, Terier Andreessen,

“The Stad Ship Tunnel project that we are developing will not look like a gross human intervention in nature. It will have the most aesthetic forms and harmoniously fit into the surrounding landscape. We expect construction to start as early as 2019. ”
