According to Xinhua News Agency, in Guizhou Province, in southwestern China, the world's largest radio telescope, Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (or FAST), opened its doors to everyone. It is noteworthy that residents and guests of China can visit this place practically free of charge: they will have to spend only on a bus ticket.
FAST was commissioned in September 2016, and plans for the creation were put forward in 1994. The area of the telescope is 1.6 kilometers with a diameter of 500 meters, which is approximately equivalent to 30 football fields. The construction of the world's largest radio telescope spent about 180 million US dollars. During the time elapsed since launch, all the necessary tests and equipment settings were carried out. Now, after opening for visitors, a so-called “silence zone” has been created within a radius of five kilometers around the telescope for the smooth operation of the telescope equipment. In this area, any signals of all telecommunications devices are blocked. In addition, before entering the observation deck, visitors are required to deposit mobile phones, digital cameras, smart bracelets, tablets, laptops and other electronics. In order not to remain without means of communication on the territory of the complex, there are several telephone booths from which you can call the internal numbers of the People's Republic of China free of charge.
According to a press release, only two thousand people can visit the telescope every day, and the only paid service — trips on a special bus and visiting the astronomical museum — will cost 50 yuan (about $ 7) for visitors. This price includes not only a tour of the complex, but also a visit to the astronomical museum and other attractions of the FAST radio telescope.
