Testing of facial recognition system begins in US airports

In the US, at the end of this month, the first face recognition system tests should begin at several airports. Passengers of the airline JetBlue Airways, which initiated the experiment, will not even have to get their passports and other documents to get on board the aircraft. After all, it is enough for the new system to glance at the faces of the people in order to check them through the databases of security services and to register for the flight. In order to bring this project to life, JetBlue Airways joined forces with the Customs Service and the US Border Patrol. SITA is responsible for the program side of the project.

The work of the new system is based on reconciliation of the person’s face with the photo stored in the database. The first to experience the work of a new security system passengers, departing from the city of Boston to the Caribbean islands. People will not need to present any papers at all or register in advance to participate in this program. In the process of recognition, a person just needs to stand in front of the camera, which instantly scans the face and checks it with the database. In case of refusal to participate in the experimental program, the passenger has the right to go on board the aircraft in the old proven way.

Of course, system developers do not expect that everything will go perfectly smoothly. New software is probably still full of flaws, and it will take some time to put it into operation on an ongoing basis. Especially for this, the system will be monitored by airport security officers, who will ensure that the software does not break firewood, as well as listen to criticism and comments from passengers.
