According to the press service of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, scientists of this educational institution managed to develop and patent the production technology of a porous metal based on an aluminum alloy. Due to the unusual structure, even fairly large sheets of metal do not sink in water.
The effect of porosity is achieved not only due to the alloy itself, but also due to the addition of a special foaming gas at the manufacturing stage. The advantage of the porous metal compared to the "usual" is not only buoyancy, but also increased rigidity of the finished metal structures, as well as extremely high sound and heat insulating properties. As stated by the deputy head of the Laboratory for Light Materials and Structures at St. Petersburg State University, Oleg Panchenko,
“If a high porosity of the material is reached, its density can be reduced to the level of water density and even lower. This means that the material will not sink. For example, when used in the construction of marine vessels of this type of metal, they will be able to maintain buoyancy even in the event of serious damage to the hull. ”
Porous alloy in the section
Very often, metal with a thickness of about 1 millimeter is used in production, which imposes a number of restrictions. For example, the difficulty of connecting parts together or changing the shape of the blanks. The use of a porous material will make it possible to avoid many constraints, increase the thickness and at the same time preserve the weight and rigidity of the structure.
It should be noted that a similar technology has already been applied by Japanese experts, but their metal was entirely porous. Developers from the northern capital managed to create a metal that is not uniform in structure: between the lower and upper solid layers a porous layer is enclosed, which makes it possible to use it in a number of metal structures, including during welding.
