Modern developments concerning the ability to restore hearing and sight to people are usually aimed at restoring the senses. But experts from Rise’s American University decided to go the other way, creating a brain implant FlatScope, which is able to receive information from external devices, and then, processing data and stimulating certain parts of the brain, to compensate for the loss of sight and hearing.
The fact that the Federal Defense Agency promising research projects announced a competition, the purpose of which is to create such devices, was announced last week. It is planned to allocate about 65 million dollars for the study. At the initial stage, developers will receive four million dollars, which will allow them to continue research and development of a software and hardware system for restoring vision.
Modern systems operating in a similar way are rather limited in their capabilities, therefore, the quality of capture, transmission and processing of information is out of the question. Employees of the Rise University laboratory plan to take research to a new level and create a neural interface that directly affects hundreds of thousands, and in the long run, millions of neurons in the cerebral cortex.
“People can create sophisticated and miniature chips and components for smartphones, for example, why can't we do something like this by using existing technologies to create neural interfaces?” Said Jacob Robinson, head of the university’s engineering laboratory.
While the project is at a very early stage, therefore, it is still premature to talk about the beginning of some tests, but work is already underway, and there are no problems with financing.
