Earlier it was reported that Airbus is preparing to start testing "flying cars" at the end of 2017, but now company representatives said they are planning large-scale tests for the end of the next, 2018. To do this, there are all the necessary developments and resources, but the purpose of the unit is to create a comfortable and safe vehicle capable of carrying several passengers. Apparently, this was the reason for the decision to transfer the flight tests of passenger drones.
Now engineers are busy refining the first reduced flying prototype of the drone, which was called the Alpha-Demonstrator. When the tests of the demonstrator version, completed on a 1: 7 scale of the planned size, end, experts will begin to prepare a full-size version for the flights.
After the alpha version is run-in offline by the end of 2018, the developers plan to begin testing the next version of the flying taxi, called the BetaDemonstrator. Serial production of aircraft is scheduled for 2022-2023 year. It is assumed that the device will be able to fly at speeds up to 120 kilometers per hour, and the flight distance will be approximately 60 kilometers.
According to the company, passenger aircraft will relieve the roads and can become an inexpensive alternative to the usual public transport.
