The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology Research Group has proposed a new way to extract wind power. To do this, the engineers suggested placing the turbines not at the surface of the Earth, but in the air, fixing them on some kind of kite.
Investigating the effectiveness of wind turbines under the leadership of George Stenchikov, the university engineers came to the conclusion that the air flow at the surface of the Earth is extremely unstable and nothing can be done about it. But, having studied information received from NASA about wind strength at different heights, they were able to calculate the most successful points and heights for securing a new type of aero-turbines and began testing.
Strong winds that constantly blow at high altitude can help solve the problem of energy efficiency of air turbines, so engineers have concluded that kite-turbines connected to the ground by cables will be an excellent substitute for traditional wind turbines.
If necessary, they will be able to climb higher or descend independently, being at a height of two to three kilometers. The Stenchikov team is working on the implementation of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 plan, according to which the kingdom will have to begin a smooth transition to renewable energy sources.
