Elastic sensor will change the way we interact with wearable electronics

Smart watches and other tiny gadgets at first glance seem convenient to use, but their tiny touch screens are not always comfortable for all users. Engineers from Saarland University (Germany) decided to contribute to the wearable electronics industry and developed a unique elastic sensor, with which the user can perform several actions at once with his gadgets.


The size of the sensor resembles the usual pea, only black rubber. It was decided to call him Deform Wear, in view of the fact that interactions with him are performed precisely by deforming his form. Being connected to any device, in terms of functionality, the sensor can easily replace the user with a touch screen. You can press on it like a button, move your finger a little to one side or the other, or flatten it with two fingers at once. Each time the reaction to your action will be appropriate.

To date, the sensor prototypes are made in the form of a ring, bracelet and pendant. But German engineers are confident that in the future such a sensor can be glued, for example, on a finger, after which it will become the direct control panel of your wearable electronics. Inside the sensor is arranged as follows: in its middle there is an LED, and at the base there are four photodiodes that measure the level of light falling on their surface. Shifting the LED, pressing it to the base or blocking the light from it with two fingers, a person changes the direction of light falling, thereby giving commands to the system.

The team of engineers has already managed to test their invention not only on smart watches, but also on video games (including for virtual reality), as well as to control a smart TV. Below you can see how the device works in practice.
