Diabetes mellitus is most often referred to as diabetes mellitus, in which glucose levels rise in a person’s blood. The name it comes from the Greek word "diabayno", meaning "pass through." For the first time, the syndromes of this disease were discovered before the XVII century. Patients with type 1 diabetes are forced to regularly give themselves insulin injections in order to maintain proper blood sugar levels. But it will be possible to get rid of the injections with the help of an artificial pancreas developed by specialists from Harvard University.
30 patients participated in the 12-week trial of the innovative system created at Harvard. Scientists are very proud of their development and believe that it can significantly improve the quality of life of diabetics. The artificial pancreas is controlled by an application installed on a smartphone, thanks to which the patient always knows the current level of glucose in his blood and decides whether to use a traditional injection or use a tiny pump that supplies the drug to his blood.
“Today it was the longest human trial we organized. All the tests that we have carried out up to this point have allowed us to optimize the algorithms of the device so that the quality of life of patients increased to the most optimal level, ”said Harvard professor Francis Doyle.
The artificial pancreas was created with the emphasis on the fact that it was able to repeat the functions of a real organ of the human body. The closed system contains an insulin pump, as well as a subcutaneous sensor, which in real time monitors the composition of blood and transmits it via Bluetooth to a patient’s smartphone. Depending on the level of glucose, the pump can automatically inject the required amount of insulin into the body, thereby regulating its condition. Researchers believe that the tests of the device were more than successful. While the press is not told when the project will reach the stage that it can be put on the market. But scientists do not rule out that this will happen very soon.
