State Corporation Roskosmos wants to create a high-grade satellite network covering the whole world. The corresponding project of a system of global high-speed Internet access will be presented on May 22, according to the announcement of the state corporation. Thus, Russia can create competitor OneWeb Satellites - a joint project of Airbus and OneWeb companies, S3 middle-orbit European O3b system, as well as Starlink from American company SpaceX, whose head is Ilon Mask. Development of the concept of a new radar satellite system was carried out by TsNIIMash.
The presentation will be made by the General Director of Roskosmos Igor Komarov. Its moderator will be executive director for business development and commercialization of the corporation Anton Zhiganov.
"The project of creating a national system for covering the Earth's territory with high-speed Internet access and providing a continuous communication channel for unmanned vehicles, Internet of things and secure data transmission will be presented," the announcement reads.
According to Zhiganov, the Roskosmos project will be able to complement the OneWeb system and will be the next stage in the development of Russia's space communications systems. The expert stressed that by creating a national Internet access system, Roscosmos does not refuse further cooperation with international partners on OneWeb.
As it became known from different sources, it is a project of a global multifunctional information satellite system (GMISS). Initially, the initiative to create the system belongs to the company "Russian Space Systems".
According to earlier reports, the implementation of the project until 2020 will require 299 billion rubles. To resolve the issue, a consortium with the participation of Roskosmos, Vnesheconombank and other organizations should be established by June 2018. The first stage of development work with the development and manufacture of prototype components of the system should be completed by the end of 2020.
The British OneWeb system will be built on the basis of 672 satellites located in two circular orbits (800 and 950 kilometers). In addition, it is planned to build interfacing stations, which will distribute the Internet in the territories served. Initially, 50 stations are planned to be built. In the future, they should be located at a distance of about 2500 kilometers from each other around the world.
OneWeb LLC plans to raise up to $ 3 billion of private capital to build satellites (including backup ones, plan to produce about 900 space vehicles), pay start-up services and build a ground-based term and control center and have already secured the support of many influential corporations.
In addition to OneWeb, competing projects are actively implemented. For example, with Soyuz rockets, four satellites of the medium-orbit system O3b were orbited three times from the Kura space center. They are also designed to provide high-speed Internet. This is a European system overseen by the SES corporation. According to the plan of the program, the next launch is scheduled for 2019. The cost of the O3b system is estimated at one billion dollars.
Of course, it is worth mentioning and Starlink - owned by the company SpaceX project of high-speed satellite Internet. Its actual implementation began on February 22, 2018: two test satellites, Tintin-A and Tintin-B, were launched into the orbit using the Falcon 9 launch vehicle. In general, the company Ilona Mask is going to launch about 12,000 satellites. The company itself estimated the cost of implementing the project Starlink at ten billion dollars, but outside experts found these figures too optimistic.
